Wool & Product Care

Caring for wool is simpler than it seems.

As a mum, I know how important it is that the pieces we choose for our babies truly last, hopefully not just throughout one season. This guide is here to help you make the most of every Wool & Well piece, so each garment can be worn with comfort, trusted with confidence and cherished enough to pass on.

Washing & Drying Instructions

Wool–silk baby garments don’t need frequent washing. The natural fibers, especially untreated merino wool like used in our garments, are naturally breathable, odor-resistant and antibacterial. In most cases, simply airing the garment out between wears is enough. You can hang it outside, near a window, or even in the bathroom while you shower, letting gentle steam and airflow refresh the fabric.

This helps remove moisture and mild odors without exposing the delicate fibers to unnecessary washing.

When a wash is needed, we recommend either hand washing in luke warm water or using the wool cycle on your machine with (30 C) cold water and a wool detergent. Avoid wringing or rubbing, and instead press gently to release excess water.

Unlike heavier knits, these lightweight baby garments can be hung to dry, as they won’t stretch under their own weight. Just shape gently while damp and avoid drying near direct heat or sunlight. Et voilà.

Store Your Products

Before storing any wool garment, make sure it’s clean and completely dry, moths and other pests are attracted to oils, food, and sweat left on fabric, especially natural fibers like wool and silk.

For everyday use, a dry, well‑ventilated wardrobe or drawer is ideal. Light airflow helps keep garments fresh and discourages insects, which prefer dark, undisturbed environments.

If you’re putting pieces away for a longer period (like summer months), you have a couple of good options:

  • Airtight containers or zip‑lock storage bags can help block out moths and protect delicate garments once they’re clean and dry.
  • Pair storage with natural repellents like cedar blocks or lavender sachets, which many people use to help deter moths (though these work best as part of a broader approach).

Because wool garments, even lightweight baby pieces, can be sensitive to stretching and stress, we recommend folding them rather than hanging them for long‑term storage. Folding helps keep their shape intact and reduces the chance of distortion over time.

Every now and then it’s good practice to air stored items out and check for any signs of pests or moisture, a quick refresh helps ensure your favorite pieces stay beautiful for many seasons.

Longevity

Wool is incredibly durable when treated with care. Let your baby’s wool garments rest between wears, wash sparingly, and follow our care tips. These small habits help your pieces stay beautiful and useful for years, perhaps even to pass on to another little one.

For small snags or wear on jersey baby garments, there are wonderful simple repair techniques available online, and we’ll be sharing our own tips and step-by-step tutorials in the future. A little mending can go a long way in giving each piece an even longer life.

Wool fibers

Wool is one of nature’s most intelligent fibers. Untreated merino wool keeps all of its natural properties fully intact, warming when it’s cold, breathing when it’s warm, and gently helping regulate your baby’s temperature right next to their skin. It’s naturally odor-resistant, antibacterial and fully biodegradable.

For our undergarments, this beautiful wool is blended with silk, adding an extra level of softness and comfort for delicate skin. And every fiber we use is ecologically sourced and free from harmful chemicals. The best quality we can find to date on the market.

Responsibility

I believe that sustainability begins with choosing less, but better. Wool is a renewable, long-lasting fiber that needs minimal washing and stays beautiful over time. My focus is on timeless design, natural materials, and conscious sourcing, so your choices feel good today, and tomorrow.

As a solopreneur, I source every piece in small, carefully planned batches to avoid overproduction. It’s my way of honoring both the craft and the planet, bringing you only what’s truly needed, thoughtfully made, and meant to last.

Certifications

I choose textiles that meet the highest environmental and ethical standards. The wool used in W&W garments is kbT-certified (kontrolliert biologische Tierhaltung) organic wool, sourced with full respect for the animals, the land and the people involved.

While the raw wool fibers come from outside Germany, every step of knitting and manufacturing takes place in southern Germany. It’s an honor to collaborate with one of the last remaining family-run manufacturers in the region, partners who share my values of transparency, careful craftsmanship and responsible production.

For us, it’s not just about creating baby garments. It’s about keeping a tradition alive, supporting small-scale expertise, and offering you pieces made with integrity from start to finish.

Safety

Babies can’t yet regulate their body temperature reliably, which is why choosing the right next-to-skin layers matters so much. Wool does this naturally: it warms when it’s cool, releases heat when it’s warm, and helps prevent overheating far more effectively than synthetic fibers or even cotton.

The wool used for W&W´s garments is organic kbT-certified and completely untreated, meaning it skips the aggressive processes conventional wool often undergoes. There is no chlorine treatment, no superwash coating and no synthetic resin finish. Because the fibers remain in their pure, natural state, they stay exceptionally soft, breathable, and safe, ideal even for newborns and babies with highly sensitive skin.

Untreated wool also retains its natural moisture-regulating abilities: it can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet, then release it again into the air. This helps keep your little one dry and comfortably balanced, supporting a stable microclimate around the skin.

Every Wool & Well garment is made without harmful chemicals, ensuring that what touches your baby’s skin is as gentle, pure and protective as nature intended.
